SeaWorld San
Diego:
In
a town full of well-known tourist attractions,
SeaWorld San Diego remains one of the most popular.
Entertaining shows like Dolphin Discovery, Shamu
Adventure, Pets Rule! and the new movie adventure
R. L. Stine’s Haunted Lighthouse 4-D are
sure crowd-pleasers, while a host of cool rides
like Shipwreck Rapids, Wild Arctic, Journey
to Atlantis and Skyride keep the excitement
level high. Take the whole family for a full
day of fun under the sun!
San Diego Zoo:
With its
high-quality habitats, acclaimed captive breeding
and animal exchange programs, esteemed zoological
society and some truly amazing animals, it’s
no wonder the San Diego Zoo is one of the best-known
zoos in the world. Visitors flock to the Balboa
Park location as well as its companion Wild
Animal Park in nearby Escondido to see some
of the world’s rare, exotic animals like
polar bears, giant pandas, Tasmanian devils,
warthogs, pygmy chimpanzees and much more.
Old Town San Diego State Historical
Park:
Old Town
celebrates San Diego’s heritage as the
first Spanish settlement in California, when
a mission and fort were established in 1769.
Visitors can walk through five original adobe
buildings, including La Casa de Estudillo and
La Casa de Machado y Stewart. Always a lively
nightspot, Old Town is filled with specialty
shops, a variety of restaurants and a string
of bars and pubs.
Coronado and La Jolla Beaches:
Some of the
most beautiful beaches on the California coast
can be found in San Diego. La Jolla’s
rugged coastline is studded with magnificent
beaches like Black’s, La Jolla Shores,
Children’s Pool, La Jolla Cove and Windansea
Beach. Take a short drive over the bridge to
Coronado Island and spend some time at beaches
rated among America’s best in 2001, 2002
and 2003 by the Travel Channel.
San Diego Sports Arena and Qualcomm
Stadium:
Hockey’s
San Diego Gulls, indoor soccer’s Sockers
and arena football’s Riptide all make
their home at the San Diego Sports Arena, located
near the intersection of Interstates 8 and 5.
The venue also hosts a variety of concerts,
shows, festivals and special events. For more
sports action, head out to city-owned-and-operated
Qualcomm Stadium, home of the National Football
League’s San Diego Chargers. The San Diego
Padres played their last game at “The
Q” in 2003.
Cabrillo National Monument:
The Cabrillo
National Monument memorializes Juan Rodríguez
Cabrillo’s landing at San Diego Bay on
September 28, 1542—the first time a European
expedition had landed on what later became the
west coast of the United States. The park includes
numerous historical points of interest such
as the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and visitors
are treated to splendid views of San Diego’s
harbor and skyline. The monument was established
on October 14, 1913, and is located on the Point
Loma peninsula in San Diego.
Sportfishing:
Put simply,
San Diego is a sportfishing mecca. San Diego
Bay and neighboring Point Loma Harbor offer
anglers many top-notch deep-sea and sportfishing
outlets, with a catch that is just as varied
as the types of fishing boats they use. Professional,
popular sportfishing establishments include
Fisherman’s Landing, H&M Landing,
Point Loma Sportfishing and Seaforth Sportfishing.
